altec 413

does anyone know anything about an altec 413? it has a motor similair to the 421, except it isnt painted... the frame looks like a 416-8a. the frame is bolted to the motor and has a surround similair to a rubber surround. but it feels lie treated paper. I bout these off e-bay.. here is the link to view

These are a great candidate for coning into 515-G's. That fat mud magnet really has the Gauss!

Or, cone 'em back to 421's. GPA can do either for you. The older, small (15") frame is more useful as well, as it will fit both new and old cabs from the rear.

It all depands on your end use. You got a stellar deal, too!

These are very rare drivers from the early 70's that were developed at the same time as the 411-8A. Like that driver, they were meant to be used in sealed enclosures. I only know of two speaker systems that used them - the Granada and the Santiago. Later versions of the Stantiago replaced this driver with the 411-8A.

The cloth roll surrounds used on this driver and the original 411-8A were problematic. According to an Altec design engineer I talked to, they made an audible crackling sound at higher excursion. Later versions of the 411-8A used the more common foam half roll surround.

I doubt that you can get recones for them since they were around for such a short period of time. I'm not sure if the cone geometry is the same as any other Altec or if the gap geometry is the same. Its 411-8A cousin was unique and incompatible with any other recone kit.
